『괴물성: 시각 문화에서의 인간 괴물』은 전시 《MODERN GROTESQUE TIMES》의 사전 연구 과정에서 번역·출판된 학술서이다. 이 책의 저자인 알렉사 라이트는 영상, 사운드, 인터랙티브 디지털 미디어를 매체로 활동하는 예술가이자 웨스트민스터대학교 Art and Visual Culture 프로그램의 교수로, 오랜 연구를 통해 시각문화 속에 등장해 온 괴물적·비정상적 인간 형상의 계보를 추적한다. 고대의 ‘기괴한 종족’에서부터 근대의 ‘범죄 괴물’에 이르기까지, 이 책은 괴물이라는 문화적 형상을 통해 ‘정상’과 ‘비정상’이라는 개념이 시각문화 속에서 어떻게 지속적으로 굴절되고 재해석되어 왔는지를 심층적으로 탐구한다.

Monstrosity: The Human Monster in Visual Culture is a scholarly volume translated and published as part of the preliminary research for the exhibition MODERN GROTESQUE TIMES. Written by Alexa Wright—an artist working in video, sound, and interactive digital media, and a professor in the Art and Visual Culture program at the University of Westminster—the book traces the visual history of monstrous and aberrant human figures. From ancient “monstrous races” to the modern “criminal monster,” it critically examines how the concepts of “normal” and “abnormal” have been continually refracted and redefined within visual culture through the cultural figure of the monster.
