강연은 만주국(1932-1945)의 시각 문화를 하나의 실험실로 다룬다. 남만주철도가 발행한 화보 잡지 『만주그래프(満洲グラフ)』, 관제 포스터, 그림엽서 등에서 반복적으로 나타나는 도시 이미지는 당대의 현실을 기록한 것이 아니라, 아직 존재하지 않는 미래를 앞당겨 제시하는 투사물이었다. 1932년 포스터 〈흥아대만주국(新興大満洲国)〉에 등장하는 여성의 배후에 솟은 고층 건축이 실재하지 않았다는 사실은 이를 압축적으로 보여준다. 강연은 이러한 이미지들이 "미래로서의 아시아"라는 시각적 문법을 체계화했으며, 그 문법이 이후 반전되어 오늘날 사이버펑크 디스토피아의 아시아 도시 재현으로 되돌아온다는 논지를 제시했다.
이 논의는 테크노 오리엔탈리즘 연구의 계보 위에 놓인다. 아시아와 아시아인을 저기술적이거나 초기술적으로 상상하는 이 담론의 구조를, 강연은 전후 서구의 시선에서만 찾는 대신 제국 일본이 스스로 생산한 미래 이미지에서 그 전사(前史)를 발굴하고자 했다. 발표 이후 참석자들과 함께 아시아 내부의 오리엔탈리즘, 아카이브 이미지의 동시대적 전용, 그리고 이 연구가 향후 전시와 출판으로 확장될 가능성에 대해 토론했다.
On 21 July 2026, I was invited to Professor Natsumi Araki's Intermedia Art seminar at Tokyo University of the Arts to deliver the guest lecture "Asia as a Future Image: Manchukuo's Visual Regime and the Genealogy of Techno-Orientalism." The lecture shared findings from research conducted during the 2026 Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS) Research Residency.
The lecture treats the visual culture of Manchukuo (1932-1945) as a laboratory. The urban imagery recurring across Manshu Graph, the pictorial magazine issued by the South Manchuria Railway, alongside state-sponsored posters and picture postcards, did not record a present condition but projected a future that had not yet arrived. The 1932 poster "Rising Great Manchukuo" makes this legible in condensed form: the modern high-rise rising behind the woman never existed. On this basis, the lecture argued that such images systematized a visual grammar of "Asia as the future," and that the same grammar was subsequently inverted into the cyberpunk dystopia through which Asian cities are represented today.
The argument situates itself within the genealogy of techno-orientalism, the discourse that imagines Asia and Asians as either low-tech or hyper-technological. Rather than locating that structure solely in a postwar Western gaze, the lecture excavated its prehistory in the future-images that imperial Japan produced of itself. The discussion that followed addressed orientalism internal to Asia, the contemporary appropriation of archival imagery, and the prospects for developing this research into a forthcoming exhibition and publication.
