If Edward Said’s Orientalism identified the ways in which the West constituted the East as a regressive other, Techno-Orientalism 2.0 analyzes the moment at which that other is inverted into an excessively advanced, mechanized future. As David S. Roh, Betsy Huang, and Greta Aiyu Niu define it, techno-orientalism is the phenomenon of imagining Asia and Asians in hypo- or hypertechnological terms within cultural production and political discourse.

A decade has passed since the 2015 volume that established the concept as a field of study, a decade in which the world has moved through a pandemic, a new cold war, and a contest for AI supremacy. This book assembles eighteen studies that rethink techno-orientalism across that altered terrain.

What distinguishes it from the first volume is a shift in the object of analysis. Where the techno-orientalism of the 1980s concentrated on the racialized subject, the “faceless worker” of the Japanese automobile factory, its present form disperses into structures: TikTok’s data collection, Huawei’s manufacturing, the semiconductor supply chain. Anxiety no longer attaches to a particular body but distributes itself across platforms, infrastructures, and states, and the logic of racialization penetrates beyond the level of representation into policy, law, and economic planning. The essays here move from subject to structure, tracking techno-orientalism as it becomes a field of force.

The geographic scope widens accordingly. Where the first book centered on relations between East Asia (Japan, Korea) and the United States, this collection encompasses China as the dominant perceived threat alongside the rise of South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Global South. It extends beyond literary texts to film, games, documentary, state public art, music, and museums, and takes up the points at which techno-orientalism intersects with Afrofuturism and Indigenous futurism, as well as the anti-Asian racism reignited by COVID-19.

This translation was carried out alongside my own research into Manchukuo’s visual regime and the genealogy of techno-orientalism, and was completed during the 2026 Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS) Research Residency.
