본 전시는 코리아나미술관과 코리아나 화장박물관이 소장한 호랑이 관련 유물과 회화, 그리고 동시대 작가들의 시선으로 재해석된 영상, 회화, 설치 작품을 한자리에 모았다. 전시 제목은 비디오 아티스트 백남준의 동명 작품에서 착안한 것으로, 호랑이라는 상징에 대한 지속적이고 현재적인 믿음을 ‘살아있다’라는 현재형 동사를 통해 강조하고자 한다. 전시장에는 액운을 물리치는 힘이 있다고 믿어 착용했던 호랑이발톱 노리개, 무관의 의복을 장식한 호랑이 흉배, 포효하는 호랑이를 담은 맹호도, 익살스러운 호랑이가 등장하는 민화 등이 소개된다. 나아가 현대 작가들은 호랑이의 상징성을 역사와 문화, 신화를 잇는 매개로 삼아 새로운 조형적 탐구를 펼친다. 《호랑이는 살아있다》는 전통과 현대를 넘나드는 호랑이 표상을 통해, 이 상징이 지닌 문화적 맥락과 예술적 가능성을 다각도로 조명하는 시간을 선사한다.
Tiger Is Alive is a special exhibition that examines the layered symbolism and cultural significance of the tiger in Korean art. Throughout history, the tiger has been perceived in Korean culture as both a national emblem and a spiritual creature endowed with supernatural powers. It embodies a complex duality: fierce, agile, and formidable, yet wise, benevolent, humorous, and endearingly human. Beyond Korea, the tiger frequently appears as a mythic symbol across East Asia. Although now endangered, its symbolic presence continues to resonate and remains vividly alive in our collective imagination.
This exhibition brings together tiger-related artifacts and paintings from the collections of the Coreana Museum of Art and the Coreana Cosmetic Museum, alongside video, painting, and installation works by contemporary artists who reinterpret the tiger’s image. The exhibition title draws inspiration from a work by video artist Nam June Paik, emphasizing through the present-tense verb “is alive” the continuing vitality of belief in the tiger as a symbolic entity. Among the works on view are amulets fashioned from tiger claws believed to ward off misfortune, embroidered badges depicting tigers adorning military attire, maenghodo paintings of roaring tigers, and folk paintings that render tigers with a humorous charm. For contemporary artists, the tiger serves as a mediating figure linking history, culture, and mythology, prompting new artistic inquiries. Tiger Is Alive offers a multifaceted exploration of the tiger’s representation, revealing how this enduring symbol connects traditional and contemporary contexts and continues to inspire artistic imagination.
