《우주 엘리베이터》 리뷰북은 국립현대미술관 다원예술 2024 프로젝트를 심층적으로 기록하고 조망하는 출판물이다. 이 프로젝트는 ‘우주’라는 또 다른 현실과 그와 연관된 감각을 예술의 언어로 탐구하는 연간 기획으로, 공학적 상상력에서 비롯된 ‘우주 엘리베이터’라는 개념을 출발점으로 삼았다. 전시는 미래와 우주에 대한 지속적인 열망, 그것이 내포한 현실적 제약과 본질적 두려움을 예술적으로 재해석하며, “새로운 예술이란 무엇인가, 왜 그것이 필요한가, 그리고 과거의 구상은 오늘날 어떻게 유효한가”라는 질문을 제기했다.

9월부터 12월까지 이어진 프로그램에는 연극, 무용, 퍼포먼스, 설치, VR, 영화 등 다양한 장르의 작업이 참여했으며, 총 16명(팀)의 예술가가 이러한 논의를 시각화했다. 리뷰북에는 성용희, 김재연, 신예슬, 서현석, 유운성, 이혜원, 이경미, 야곱 파브리시우스 등 연구자와 비평가, 큐레이터의 글이 수록되어 있으며, 체르핏추/토시키 오카다, 노경애, 박민희, 김치앤칩스, 아피찻퐁 위라세타쿤, 유코 모리, 이미래의 작업과 함께 심포지엄 〈온‒보딩: 우주로 가기, 우주에서 사랑하기〉, 퍼포먼스 〈국립현대미술관 다원예술 쇼케이스 2024〉 등의 프로그램을 소개한다. 《우주 엘리베이터》 리뷰북은 과거와 현재, 가상과 현실을 넘나드는 탐구의 궤적을 담아내며, 예술이 사회·문화적 질문을 사유하고 확장해가는 과정을 독자에게 제시한다.

The Space Elevator Review Book is a comprehensive publication that documents and critically reflects on the MMCA Performing Arts 2024 project Space Elevator. Conceived as an annual program, the project explored the notion of “space” as an alternative reality and the sensory experiences it provokes, taking as its conceptual departure the technologically envisioned yet long-debated idea of a “space elevator.” Through this lens, the project reframed persistent desires for the future and outer space—together with their practical constraints and inherent anxieties—posing fundamental questions: What constitutes new art? Why must it be pursued? And how do past visions remain relevant today?

Between September and December, the program unfolded through theater, dance, performance, installation, VR, and film, featuring contributions from sixteen participating artists and collectives. This review volume gathers critical writings by Seong Yonghee, Kim Jaeyeon, Shin Yesle, Seo Hyunseok, Yoo Woonsung, Hyewon Lee, Lee Kyungmi, and Jacob Fabricius. It further introduces works by Cherpitshu / Toshiki Okada, Noh Kyungae, Park Minhee, Kimchi and Chips, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Yuko Mori, and Lee Mirae, as well as symposiums such as On-boarding: Going to Space, Loving in Space and performances like MMCA Performing Arts Showcase 2024. By tracing trajectories that traverse past and present, the virtual and the real, this review book offers readers insight into how art engages with and expands upon pressing cultural and societal questions.
